Deadly Tragedy on Mt. Baldy: 3 Hikers Found Dead, Including Teen Who Fell 500 Feet (2026)

A tragic reality has unfolded on California's Mt. Baldy, where three hikers were found dead, including a young 19-year-old who fell a staggering 500 feet. This snow-capped peak, officially known as Mt. San Antonio, has sadly become one of the deadliest mountains in the United States. Let's delve into the details of this heartbreaking incident.

Rescue teams made a grim discovery, finding the teenager and two other deceased hikers. Jenny Smith, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, confirmed these findings during a news conference. The other two hikers were not with the teenager, and the exact time of their deaths remains unclear.

The 19-year-old had been hiking on December 29th with a friend. After the fall, the friend was thankfully able to call for help. They had to trek away from the accident site, near the Devil's Backbone trail, to find a signal and provide the rescue team with their GPS location. The friend was unharmed.

Due to the high winds, a helicopter recovery operation was impossible on Monday. However, the bodies were recovered on Tuesday. Ms. Smith also mentioned that five other hikers had been rescued from the mountain in the last five days.

Mt. Baldy, soaring to 10,064 feet (3,068m) in the San Gabriel Mountains, has seen its share of tragedy. Since 2020, more than 14 people have lost their lives on this mountain, including British actor Julian Sands in January 2023, whose remains were found five months later. Furthermore, over 100 people have been rescued from the mountain since 2020.

Proximity to Los Angeles means that Mt. Baldy attracts both experienced and inexperienced climbers. Authorities have strongly advised people to avoid the mountain, especially during the unpredictable winter weather.

"It is one of the most dangerous trails we have here in our area," Ms. Smith said about the Devil's Backbone trail. "We don't want novice hikers going up and hurting themselves."

On December 29th, when the teenager went hiking, the sun was shining, and the skies were clear, offering breathtaking views. Mt. Baldy was visible across Southern California, with views stretching to Catalina Island. But here's where it gets controversial...

The weather on Mt. Baldy can change rapidly, with treacherous conditions including snow and ice. Climbers venturing along the Devil's Backbone trail are strongly advised to carry crampons and ice axes. Authorities have not released the names of the deceased hikers.

Following the deaths and the repeated rescue responses, the trails on the mountain have been temporarily closed until the new year.
