A heart-stopping finish left the Dallas Mavericks on the wrong side of a 125-122 defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night. The game, a thrilling back-and-forth affair, came down to the wire, with Klay Thompson's last-second three-point attempt falling short, sealing the Mavericks' fate.
Deni Avdija put on a masterclass, scoring 27 points, dishing out 11 assists, and grabbing nine rebounds. He was ably supported by Shaedon Sharpe, who added 24 points, and Caleb Love, who came off the bench to score 24 points, including six three-pointers and the crucial go-ahead free throws with under a minute left.
But here's where it gets controversial: the Mavericks had fought back from a 17-point deficit, with Thompson's heroics keeping them in the game. Max Christie led the Mavericks with 25 points, and Brandon Williams chipped in with 22. Cooper Flagg's all-round performance (15 points, eight assists, six rebounds) kept Dallas in contention.
The fourth quarter saw the lead change hands eight times, with both teams trading blows. Portland looked to have the game in control, leading by 13 points with just over a minute left in the third quarter, but the Mavericks mounted a 9-2 run, capped by Thompson's running three-pointer with 0.7 seconds left, to trail by just four points going into the final quarter.
And this is the part most people miss: the Mavericks fought back to tie the game at 99, and then took their first lead of the second half, thanks to Christie's three-pointer. But Portland, led by Avdija and Love, regained the advantage with just over two minutes left.
Christie's three-pointer gave Dallas a late lead, but they couldn't hold on. Love's free throws and Sharpe's foul shots in the final seconds sealed the deal for Portland. The Trail Blazers had pushed their lead to 17 multiple times in the second quarter, but the Mavericks' resilience kept them in the game.
