Nio's Bold Move: A New Ad Takes Aim at Tesla's Charging Methods
The Future of Electric Vehicles is Here, and Nio is Leading the Charge!
Nio, a trailblazer in the EV industry, has reached an incredible milestone: 100 million battery swaps! To celebrate, they've released a thought-provoking ad that compares their innovative technology to traditional charging methods. But here's where it gets interesting... and a little controversial.
The ad opens with a familiar scene: a Tesla driver patiently waiting for their vehicle to charge. But then, a game-changer arrives - a Nio ES8 pulls up at an adjacent battery swap station. In just under three minutes, the Nio owner effortlessly exchanges their battery, showcasing the efficiency and convenience of Nio's technology.
Tesla, once a pioneer in battery swapping, demonstrated the technology back in 2013. CEO Elon Musk even boasted about a Model S completing a swap in just 90 seconds! However, by 2015, Tesla had abandoned the project, with Musk citing customer preference for Supercharging over swapping. Nio, on the other hand, took a different path.
Nio's approach has been bold and ambitious. They opened their first battery swap station in 2018 and have since built an extensive network, becoming the world's largest. This technology addresses charging anxiety and offers a unique solution: battery-as-a-service (BaaS). Under this program, customers can lease batteries, switching sizes as needed, reducing upfront costs.
As of Sunday, Nio's website boasts an impressive 100,176,290 battery swaps globally. With 3,729 swap stations and 28,035 charging piles in China alone, they've consumed a staggering 5.28 billion kWh of electricity through their stations. Nio's daily swap numbers are equally impressive, with an average of over 100,000 swaps and a record of 145,820 swaps in a single day during China's National Day holiday.
Nio's expansion plans, however, haven't always gone as smoothly. In 2021, they announced an ambitious goal of over 4,000 swap stations worldwide by 2025, including 1,000 outside China. But as deployment slowed, particularly overseas, these targets were scaled back. As of 2024, Nio operated 2,995 stations in China, falling short of their original guidance.
Looking ahead to 2026, Nio's founder and CEO, William Li, has shared plans to add over 1,000 new stations, aiming for a total of 4,600 by year-end. However, the deployment of current fourth-generation stations has slowed, as they cannot support new battery sizes for Nio's sub-brands, Onvo and Firefly. Nio's fifth-generation stations are currently in testing, with mass production scheduled for Q2.
Competition is heating up in China's battery swap market. CATL, a battery giant, launched its "Choco-Swap" ecosystem in 2024, partnering with multiple carmakers for broader compatibility. CATL's stations can replace batteries in as little as 70-80 seconds, outpacing Nio's time. CATL's rapid expansion plans are ambitious, aiming for over 3,000 stations by 2026, while Nio has installed approximately 3,600 stations over seven years.
Nio's European expansion has also faced challenges. While they opened a plant in Hungary to assemble swap stations and established their first European station in Norway, expansion has slowed. As of Sunday, only 60 stations have been opened in China in the first five weeks of 2026. The decision to expand battery swap infrastructure in new European markets is left to local distributors, leaving uncertainty about Nio's future in these regions.
