Richard Avedon’s Captivating Portraits of Everyday People from the American West
January 30, 2026
Imagine a world where the essence of working-class America is captured in striking detail through the lens of a master photographer. Between the years 1979 and 1984, renowned fashion photographer Richard Avedon embarked on an extraordinary journey across 21 states. Armed with an 8 x 10 large-format Deardorff camera and a simple white backdrop, he dedicated himself to creating remarkable portraits that tell the story of everyday life in the American West.
Avedon utilized only natural lighting for his photographs, a choice that added to the authenticity of his work. To make his subjects feel at ease, he positioned himself beside the camera and engaged directly with them, fostering a genuine connection that would shine through in the portraits.
Currently, a selection from his iconic series "In the American West," which was originally commissioned by and first showcased at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, is being exhibited at the Gagosian Grosvenor Hill Gallery in London (https://gagosian.com/exhibitions/2026/richard-avedon-facing-west/).
Curated by Caroline Avedon, the granddaughter of the late photographer, the exhibition titled "Facing West" features 21 rare prints, including several works that have not been seen since their initial unveiling in 1985. Avedon’s extensive project included over 1,000 portraits, where he collaborated with his assistant Laura Wilson to meet and photograph a diverse range of individuals. His subjects encompassed various professions and rural activities, shining a light on often-overlooked figures, from drifters to coal miners.
As noted by AnOther Magazine (https://www.anothermag.com/art-photography/16886/richard-avedon-timeless-portraits-of-the-american-west-gagosian-exhibition), Avedon himself described these portraits as representing "a fictional West," asserting, "I don’t think the West of these portraits is any more conclusive than the West of John Wayne." This statement invites a deeper reflection on the representation of the American West in art and media—how much of it is reality, and how much is an interpretation or fabrication?
Despite this notion, the raw simplicity of Avedon’s images carries immense power. He intentionally left the black border on the edges of the film negatives to highlight the absence of digital manipulation, showcasing the authenticity of each moment captured. Furthermore, he experimented with new presentation techniques, such as mounting his prints on aluminum. Caroline Avedon’s thoughtful selection of images transitions from themes of hardship and labor to those of youth and hope, emphasizing a rich diversity of experiences for contemporary audiences.
Among the compelling figures featured in this collection are coal miner James Story, whom Avedon likened to Saint Sebastian due to the embodiment of both strength and innocence in his character. Additionally, there is Richard Wheatcroft, a rancher hailing from Jordan, Montana, whom Avedon photographed twice, in 1981 and 1983, forging a lasting friendship in the process.
The exhibition "Facing West" is currently open at the Grosvenor Hill Gallery in London and will run until March 14. This is an opportunity not only to appreciate the artistry of Richard Avedon but also to engage with the profound stories of the individuals he portrayed, prompting us to consider what we understand about the American experience today.
